Canberra Shines with African Culture: A Vibrant Celebration of Unity and Diversity on Africa Day 2024

Canberra was alight with the colours, sounds, and flavours of Africa as political leaders commemorated Africa Day with unmatched fervour and joy.

ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr and ACT Minister for Multicultural Affairs Mick Gentleman joined African ambassadors in celebrating the annual event at the Rex Hotel in the city’s Inner North on Tuesday evening.

The occasion, which marks May 25th – the commemoration of the foundation of the Organisation of African Unity – was a dazzling showcase of the continent’s rich cultural diversity and a testament to the growing ties between Australia and African nations.

The night commenced with a proposed toast to the Head of State, His Majesty King Charles III, and the people of the Commonwealth of Australia. This was followed by an inspiring welcome address by Zimbabwean Ambassador to Australia Joe Mhishi, whose invitation brought together a diverse crowd of dignitaries, ambassadors, and members of the African diaspora.
