Empty Seat Theatre Company Unveils Akaraka: A Cultural Journey Through Time

In a bold move to redefine the Australian theatre landscape, Empty Seat Theatre Company has emerged as a beacon of diversity, spotlighting underrepresented voices through compelling narratives and homegrown talent.

At the forefront of this revolutionary movement is Akaraka, a stirring production penned by playwright, actor, and spoken-word poet Amarachi.

Set against the backdrop of pre-Colonial Nigeria, the play intricately weaves the tale of Adaeze, a young Nigerian woman navigating life’s crossroads in Melbourne.

Adaeze grapples with the weight of societal expectations, her vibrant family life, and a burgeoning social circle, yet remains unsettled.

Conversely, Obiefuna’s story unfolds in ancient Nigeria, his heart steadfastly fixed on the love of a princess, Olamma. His journey is one of unwavering pursuit and profound sacrifice, echoing the timeless question: How do our decisions reverberate through generations?

Akaraka stands as a poignant celebration of culture, delving deep into the intricate web of identity, love, and the profound echoes of sacrifice.

Through the prism of history, the play invites audiences to reconcile with their past, embracing it as the cornerstone for a brighter future.

“The time has come for us to prove the nuances in Australian communities – the ones that have fallen through the gaps of visibility,” director Effie Nkrumah said.

Starring African-Australian talents including Hamilton actor Victory Ndukwe and Escape From Pretoria’s Ratidzo Mambo, Akaraka promises an immersive experience, transporting audiences across continents and through centuries.

Founded in 2022 by Rachel Kamath, Ruby Duncan, and Vivian Nguyen, Empty Seat Theatre Company marks a pivotal moment in Australian theatre, championing inclusivity, authenticity, and the rich tapestry of human experience.
