Phu Quoc: Vietnam’s Hidden Gem Awaiting Rediscovery (REVIEW)

Located in the Gulf of Thailand, Phu Quoc is an enchanting island that has rapidly transformed into one of Vietnam’s premier tourist destinations.

Its allure lies in its untouched beauty and evolving infrastructure, attracting visitors from around the globe. According to Australian government data, recreational travel to Vietnam by Australians alone was valued at A$1.2 billion in 2019, with over 317,000 Australians visiting that year, underscoring Vietnam’s popularity among travellers from Down Under.

A Pre-COVID Paradise
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Phu Quoc saw a surge in visitors from Australia along with China, South Korea, Japan, and Russia. The island’s pristine beaches, lush landscapes, and burgeoning tourism facilities turned it into a hotspot for international tourists.

Over the past 15 years, Phu Quoc has undergone significant development, with notable contributions from Sun Group and Vingroup.

The southern part of the island features Sun Group’s Sun Tropical Village, a Mediterranean-style urban complex, while Vingroup’s Phu Quoc United Center in the north offers a 24/7 entertainment, resort, and shopping system.

Current Challenges
Despite its development, Phu Quoc is currently facing a period of emptiness and customer scarcity, extending beyond restaurants and night markets to entertainment and amusement areas. Even grand attractions like Thom Island Paradise and Mediterranean Town appear desolate, with very few visitors.

Bright Prospects Ahead
However, Phu Quoc continues to attract significant investment, with over 320 ventures totaling $18 billion in sectors like tourism, services, and entertainment.

The island boasts about 30,000 rooms and 800 tourism businesses, making it a hotspot for luxury hotel and resort management groups such as IHG, Wyndham, JW Marriott and AccorHotels. Phu Quoc’s ambition is to become a top-tier tourism destination by 2030, supported by favourable policies and continuous development.

Recent Accolades
Last year, Phu Quoc received new recognition from Condé Nast Traveler, being honoured as one of the world’s top islands for the second consecutive year in 2023. This accolade highlights the island’s enduring appeal and its potential for a robust tourism rebound.

A Luxurious Stay at Premier Residences Phu Quoc Emerald Bay
During my visit to Phu Quoc, I stayed at the Premier Residences Phu Quoc Emerald Bay, which proved to be a highlight of the trip despite the island still being somewhat of a “ghost town”.

One hotel employee, who opted to remain anonymous, said the island has not recovered after being hard-hit by the pandemic.

“There are barely any tourists, even the beautiful beach is always empty. This makes us worried about job security,” the staff member told BACKCOVERNEWS.COM. “Those that do come are confused by the lack of visitors.
