Miley Cyrus Sued for Allegedly Copying Bruno Mars’ Hit Song in Flowers

Miley Cyrus, the powerhouse behind the smash hit Flowers, is now at the centre of a bombshell legal showdown.

Accused of blatantly ripping off Bruno Mars’ chart-topping ballad When I Was Your Man, the pop icon faces a lawsuit from Tempo Music Investments. The company, which claims partial ownership of Mars’ 2013 hit, alleges that Cyrus lifted key elements from the song in what they call an unmistakable case of copyright theft.

Claims of Uncanny Similarity

According to legal documents obtained by TMZ, Tempo Music alleges that Flowers bears striking similarities to Mars’ emotional ballad. They assert that the melody, harmony, and chorus in Flowers closely mirror the verse of When I Was Your Man, a song that spent weeks at the top of the charts a decade earlier. Tempo Music contends that Miley’s Grammy-winning track is not only influenced by Bruno’s work but is, in fact, a product of deliberate copying.

“It is undeniable based on the combination and number of similarities between the two recordings that Flowers would not exist without When I Was Your Man,” the lawsuit states.

Tempo Music claims that Miley’s Flowers copies specific musical components, including chord progressions and lyrical content. These are substantial enough, they argue, to constitute copyright infringement. Furthermore, they insist that Miley, her label, and her producers had access to Bruno’s song and allege that this access led to the intentional copying of the hit. In addition to financial compensation, Tempo Music is seeking to have Miley barred from distributing or performing Flowers.

They argue that the success of Flowers—a song that has garnered significant acclaim and commercial success—owes much to Mars’ earlier track. The company seeks to hold Miley accountable for what they see as an intentional act of copying, emphasising that her song wouldn’t have achieved its massive success without drawing on the foundation laid by Mars.

Flowers vs When I Was Your Man: The Comparisons

Bruno Mars’ When I Was Your Man is a soul-bearing piano ballad in which the singer regrets not treating his former lover better, lamenting that another man now does what he failed to. The raw emotion and vulnerability in the lyrics were central to its popularity, making it a standout track in Mars’ discography.

Flowers, by contrast, is an anthem of empowerment and independence, with Miley celebrating her ability to love and care for herself. Despite the thematic differences between the two songs, Tempo Music claims that the musical structure and some lyrical echoes are too similar to ignore. However, any comparisons of the two tracks’ themes may also play a role in assessing the case’s merit.

Potential Implications for the Music Industry

If the lawsuit against Miley Cyrus is successful, it could spark a renewed debate within the music industry about the fine line between inspiration and infringement. Copyright lawsuits have become a contentious issue in recent years, with high-profile cases leading to significant payouts or settlements. For example, Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams were famously ordered to pay millions after their song Blurred Lines was found to have copied Marvin Gaye’s Got to Give It Up.

Miley’s legal team has yet to publicly respond to the allegations, but if the case moves forward, it may bring into question the creative processes behind some of today’s most popular music and the extent to which artists draw inspiration from one another.

What’s Next for Miley?

As Miley continues to ride the wave of success generated by Flowers, this lawsuit could cast a shadow over her accomplishments. Tempo Music is not only seeking financial compensation but also wants to prevent Miley from distributing or performing the song, raising the stakes for both parties involved.

While fans of both Miley and Bruno Mars will undoubtedly have strong opinions about the allegations, the courts will ultimately decide whether the similarities between the two songs cross the legal threshold of copyright infringement. Regardless of the outcome, the lawsuit underscores the complexities surrounding creativity and ownership in today’s highly competitive music industry.
